GOVERNOR KAINE SPEAKS TO YOUTH LEADERS top
WITH DISABILITIES AT “CAPITOL DAY”

For Immediate Release July 11, 2006

(Richmond, VA) Governor Timothy Kaine will speak to Youth Leadership Forum (YLF) student delegates from across Virginia on Thursday, July 13, 2006 at the General Assembly Building, House Room D, from 9:30 to 10:00 a.m. Governor Kaine will discuss his personal thoughts on leadership and leaders who have influenced him, the responsibility of every citizen to actively participate in the legislative process, and the importance of rising above challenges in order to succeed.

YLF is a unique leadership development program for highly motivated and talented high school students with disabilities. Student delegates are selected to participate in this intensive program through a competitive statewide application and interview process. Previous delegates report that their YLF experiences have had a lasting, positive impact on their lives.

During the week-long forum, taking place at Christopher Newport University in Newport News from July 10 through 14, student delegates will hear first-hand the real life experiences of successful adult leaders with disabilities, develop their own personal leadership plans, and share their unique perspectives on critical issues with legislators and other elected officials at the State Capitol.

The Virginia Youth Leadership Forum, now in its seventh year, is sponsored by the Virginia Board for People with Disabilities. As the state’s Developmental Disabilities Planning Council, the Virginia Board educates the public on the needs and accomplishments of people with disabilities, informs and advises business community leaders of the advantages of hiring skilled workers with disabilities, and advocates for state and local policies, programs and services that expand opportunities for people with disabilities and their families to be fully integrated into all aspects of community life.
